VPSoto vs Linode — Akamai's cloud, or a faster, cheaper alternative

Linode joined Akamai in 2022 and has 30 datacenters. VPSoto is in 19 cities including ones Linode doesn't cover (Dubai, Karachi, Tirana), supports crypto, and starts at $3.80/mo.

The honest take

Linode is one of the oldest and most reliable independent VPS hosts. Their acquisition by Akamai in 2022 gave them access to one of the world's largest CDN/edge networks — they now operate in 30 cities with rock-solid uptime.

What Linode isn't great at: their pricing hasn't moved much since the acquisition, their entry-tier 'Nanode' is $5/mo for 1 vCPU + 1 GB while NVMe got cheaper everywhere else. They also skip the MENA region and most of South Asia.

Linode (Akamai) wins at

  • Datacenter coverage: 30 cities (vs our 19). Notable Linode-only locations: Mumbai, São Paulo, Sydney, Toronto with proper regional peering.
  • Akamai-backed network: lower latency to anywhere on the planet via the largest CDN backbone.
  • Mature Marketplace: NodeBalancers, LKE (managed Kubernetes), Object Storage, Block Storage volumes.
  • Object Storage with S3-compat at $0.02/GB/mo (cheaper than DO Spaces).
  • API + CLI tooling: linode-cli is excellent, Terraform provider mature.

VPSoto wins at

  • Price at the entry tier: $3.80/mo vs Linode's $5/mo Nanode (for the same 1 vCPU / 1 GB / 25 GB).
  • MENA + South Asia presence: Dubai, Bahrain, Karachi, Dhaka — Linode has none of these.
  • Crypto checkout: BTC, USDT, ETH — Linode is card-only.
  • Multi-currency billing: USD, GBP, EUR, SAR, PKR.
  • No bandwidth overage on most plans — Linode charges $0.005/GB after included transfer.

FAQ

Is VPSoto a Linode reseller?
No. We aggregate offers from 19 different wholesale infrastructure providers and pass the savings to you.
Can I migrate my Linode to VPSoto?
Yes — Linode's image-export feature gives you a downloadable disk image. Upload it to a new VPSoto VPS, or rebuild from your existing Ansible / Terraform / Pulumi config. Most migrations take 1–2 hours.
Will I lose Akamai's CDN performance?
Possibly — if your traffic is heavily global, Akamai's backbone is a real edge. The fix: pair your VPSoto VPS with a CDN like Cloudflare (free tier) or Bunny.net for static assets. Most customers don't notice the difference for application traffic.
What about LKE (managed Kubernetes)?
We don't ship managed Kubernetes. If your workload needs it, Linode's LKE is excellent and we'll honestly point you there. For self-managed clusters, k3s or RKE2 on a few VPSoto VPSes works well — that's what most small teams do.
